John has more than 20 years of clinical mental health experience in a variety of settings working with children, adolescents, adults and families.
Given John’s breadth of experience, he is a unique practitioner that utilises a variety of therapeutic approaches dependent on the needs of the person(s). Core to successful counselling is John’s commitment to providing a safe, positive and empathic environment that is founded on empowerment, acceptance and trust. In working with young people and adolescents, John has a unique ability that utilises his extensive experience to engage, support and empower them on their life journey building resilience and skills to manage the range of mental health concerns they face. John utilises evidenced based Focused Psychological strategies within therapy according to client needs and include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focussed Therapy and a range of mindfulness-based approaches.
John began working in NGO’s in Melbourne’s South East focussed on youth and adults in crisis. This saw John assisting people with substance abuse issues, homelessness, education and employment, criminal justice and domestic violence. John has worked extensively in the education sector holding positions senior leadership, student wellbeing and Head of Counselling service positions. John’s tertiary qualifications include an undergraduate degree in Psychology, Graduate Diploma of Education, a Masters of Counselling, Masters of Leadership and Masters of Social Work. He is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker registered with the AASW and a VIT registered teacher. John is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and Medicare Australia to provide psychological services. He also holds current registration as a teacher through VIT.
